New LPC Chair Should Commit to Preserving the Historic Lower East Side
Take Action Now to let the mayor and your city council member know that the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission needs a new Chair committed to the agency's core values - the designation of new and protection of existing landmarks - as well as to ensuring the preservation of the historic Lower East Side. This is one of the city’s and country’s most historic areas, due its immigration, political, and cultural history. It's quickly disappearing due to strong and unrelenting real estate development pressures.
To preserve a portion of the area’s historic architecture and culture, the Lower East Side Preservation Initiative with the Friends of the Lower East Side have proposed a new historic district that encompasses an area south of Delancey Street, between Essex and Forsyth Street, focused on the blocks around the Tenement Museum. It is imperative that the new LPC Chair be committed to quickly moving forward with this district, which has been under review by the agency for the last three years without significant progress toward designation.
