Lower East Side Preservation Initiative and Jane’s Walk Invite You for a Virtual Walking Tour of the Yiddish Rialto: The Remarkable Theater District That Flourished In the Decades Around the Turn of the 20th Century In What's Now the East Village / Lower East Side Tuesday May 4 at 1:00PM Via Zoom The dozens of theaters that once clustered around the Lower East Side’s Second Avenue were known as the Yiddish Rialto, for the lively Yiddish language theater productions that drew crowds of thousands. Around the beginning of the 20th century this theater district was the magnet for much of the Lower East Side’s cultural entertainment. Join licensed tour guide Barry Feldman for a closeup look at the historic sites that still tell a provocative story of immigrant life a century and more ago. Partake in our exploration of the creativity and vitality of early Yiddish Theater and its contribution to New York City culture, as well as the origins of Yiddish theater, its culture, language, literature and personalities. Sites include the former Yiddish Arts Theater (presently Village East Theater), La Mama (site of the first Yiddish production in New York), the Hebrew Actors Union Building, and more. The event is free, donations are welcome! Sponsored by Lower East Side Preservation Initiative and The Municipal Art Society's Jane's Walk, this event is also being held in celebration of Lower East Side History Month.
