Terra cotta takes many forms around New York, even mimicking other building materials like limestone or granite. We’ll explore how to recognize terra cotta and differentiate it from other materials (even when it looks like stone!).

This virtual presentation will highlight  the very varied range of terra-cotta ornament found in buildings throughout the Lower East Side. There will be an opportunity to learn about terra cotta from the earliest period of American manufacture (circa 1849) to the modernist structures that are endangered in East River Park (circa 1939). Susan Tunick, President of Friends of Terra Cotta and author of several books including Terra Cotta Skyline and Terra Cotta, Don't Take It for Granite, will present this lecture.
