JOIN OUR PROTEST! STAND UP AGAINST THE CITY'S DEMOLITION OF THE HISTORIC 70 MULBERRY STREET CHINATOWN COMMUNITY CENTER / FORMER PS 23 Saturday, June 27 at 2:00PM Northeast corner of Columbus Park, corner of Mulberry & Bayard Streets Participants are to wear masks / practice social distancing 70 Mulberry Street is one of historic Chinatown's most historic buildings, located prominently across from Columbus Park. Designed by renowned NYC school architect CBJ Snyder - his first school design - and constructed in 1891, 70 Mulberry Street was originally Public School 23, and several years ago became Chinatown's community center. Although a fire in January damaged the upper floors, the building's exterior masonry wall construction appears to remain in good condition, despite the City's proclamations. We want the City to stop the building's ongoing, unnecessary demolition, retain a fully independent preservation structural engineer, and develop an independent analysis of the costs and scheduling implications of restoring the existing building versus building a new building. We want the City to fully fund the restoration and rehabilitation of the building, to be completed as quickly as possible. We do not want a new hi-rise tower or years of an empty lot due to lack of funding. The protests sponsors include Bowery Alliance of Neighbors - Chinese Freemasons - #COMA Chinatown Organization for Media Awakening - Historic Districts Council - Karlin Chan - Lower East Side Preservation Initiative - T!C ThinkChinatown - Village Preservation. Organizers: Karlin Chan, Lower East Side Preservation Initiative, and T!C ThinkChinatown. Please share this invitation with your friends, family and neighbors! |
